Which materials should you never laser cut? Safety rules for material selection

The safest rule of thumb is simple: do not use a material if you are not sure what it is made of. With many sheets, you only see the top layer, while glue, coating, printed layers, laminates, or protective films are just as decisive for your material choice.

Within that main rule, there are also material groups that you are better off excluding completely. Polycarbonate, for instance, does not belong on a general list of laser-safe materials.

Why unknown or reused sheets are a bad idea

You cannot reliably assess a sheet by color, gloss, texture, trade name, or how the material feels. Two sheets can look almost identical but have a different composition.

Therefore, offcuts, second-hand sheets, display panels, old signage, and other reused sheets are an uncertain choice if their origin and composition cannot be verified. General names such as “plastic sheet”, “advertising board”, or “transparent panel” provide too little information.

Common mistake: choosing based on appearance or product name

A neat finish or a well-known trade name does not automatically say enough about the base material. Especially with composite panels, you cannot determine which extra layers are present based on appearance alone.

Always check:

  • what the base material is
  • whether there is a coating, adhesive layer, or laminate
  • whether the product specification is complete and traceable

Which material choice is sensible?

Choose sheet material whose base material is clearly identified and where any additional layers can be verified. For wood-based sheet materials, you can start with Wood and MDF. If you want to compare materials and thicknesses side by side, All sheet materials and thicknesses is a practical starting point.

Practical tip when in doubt

Can't you determine with certainty what the sheet exactly is or which layers are on it? Then rule the material out. When laser cutting, making a careful choice is wiser than guessing.
